Baby massage

Baby massage is an ancient art that has been practiced for many centuries by many cultures. However, in the West, it only became well known during the 1980’s because of the work of Vimula McClure in the United States. She experienced the wonderful benefits of positive touch while working in India during the 1970’s. Baby Massage, as practiced today, is a combination of Indian and Swedish massage, reflexology and yoga.

Research studies dating from the 1970’s onwards validate the importance of positive touch and how it benefits both the parent and the baby. Not only will your baby feel relaxed but so will you!

The physical benefits for the baby are:

- Improves Baby weight and height gain
- Aids Baby digestion and helps relieve colic, constipation and wind
- Regulates Baby breathing and relieves nasal congestion
- Relaxes and stimulates Baby muscle tone, co-ordination and suppleness
- Relaxes the Baby and can improve sleep patterns

The emotional benefits for both the baby and the parent are:

  • - Communicates a message of love and security for your baby
  • - Promotes quality one-to-one time
  • - Promotes bonding and parental confidence
  • - Increases parents’ awareness of their Baby’s verbal and non-verbal cues of communication

Massage is a lovely way to reduce stress, especially for parents, during the early months after the arrival of a new baby. It is not something that is exclusive to mums but can be shared by dads, grandparents and older siblings. Studies have shown that it can help mums recover from post-natal depression. During the massage, Oxytocin (one of the hormones) is released both in the parents and babies’ bodies. Oxytocin is the ‘feel good’ hormone and brings about a state of relaxation and calm when released into the body and helps to provide us with loving, nurturing feelings, which helps us to bond.

Massage can also help relieve common conditions such as colic, wind and constipation.
Specific techniques are taught to relieve some of these conditions. All of the techniques used in Baby massage can be learned in either a group or individual setting. Ideally, parents benefit from a class situation because they meet other parents and their babies. It is a social outlet and above all the classes are fun.

The certified instructor is a member of the International Association of Infant Massage.
