Longford/Westmeath Community Mothers Launch

In recent weeks, three Community Mother projects based in Athlone, Longford and Mullingar have joined resources to publish a newsletter and develop a website. The newsletter is a valuable tool to let parents with babies and young children know exactly what Community Mothers are about.  Mr. Joseph Ruane, Local Health Manager of Longford/Westmeath HSE officially launched this innovative approach to supporting parents. Mr. Ruane thanked Westmeath Community Development, Longford Social Services and Athlone Community Services Council for the work in partnership with the HSE Family Support Services to deliver the projects.  Mr Ruane recognised the work of the volunteer community mothers in providing support and encouragement to over 100 families throughout the two counties. The co-ordinators of the three projects - Catriona Corcoran (Mullingar), Elaine Keogh (Longford) and Jenny Fletcher (Athlone) - were commended for their work in promoting Community Mothers in the major towns as well as offering outreach services to the wider rural communities across both counties.

The Community Mothers provide a home visiting service to all parents with children aged 0-5 years that wish to avail of the support. Spin off projects such as parent and toddler groups and the Baby Cafe have expanded the work of Community Mothers. The Baby Cafe was recently featured on the 'I-Witness' programme shown on RTE.
